What a Picture That’ll Be

Winter days around here mean gray skies, nights that darken before the workday ends, and cold wind tugging at my hat as I hurry between buildings.

Then there are these winter days.

The ones where I find myself standing on a bridge over the South Fork of the Payette River, the sun warming my shoulders as I set up my tripod.

As I made the photograph, a Chevy pickup came rumbling across the planks, slowing as it neared. Inside, an old couple in matching red beanies leaned toward the open window. They flashed me a thumbs-up.

“Beautiful day,” the driver called out.

“What a picture that’ll be,” his wife added, leaning into him.
