If you can, could you bring a safety pin and fabric tape down to us?
Sam texted me as I lay in my chair in the little shop. I glanced at the glowing text, opened my mouth and tipped my head back. “Ughhhh.”
I woke up that morning slowly. After another week of stress at work and then basically two days of family reunin I was fried. I wrote from 5-7AM then found my chair in my bedroom. I fell asleep in that chair and couldn’t wake up enough to shower and go to church. Sam showered, dressed and pointed to me.
“Maybe you should just stay home today.”
I miss church once a year, at most. I nodded. “Ok.”
They left. I stood to get a glass of water and wandered to the little shop. I’d watch old General Conference talks on my TV out there in my chair. The text came ten minutes after they left. After staring into oblivion for a minute I texted back.
I’m not sure what fabric tape is
It’s a pink tin on my dresser
Ok
Just text me when you get here. She’s stuck because her dress is wide open in the back
Stuck where?
Sitting on the bench. She can’t leave very easily so I’ll come and get the stuff from you and try and pin it so she can stand up
Oh. Got it
Leaving now. I’ll go to the parking lot at the side we usually enter.
Forest fire smoke ringed the sky as I rumbled the two miles down to the church building on Duncan Lane. Would anyone see me? I had decided to make it a little fun for myself. I drove my 1965 Chevy pickup nicknamed “Stinky”. I was wearing shorts, a t-shirt and a hat. I pulled up slowly and Sam wandered out to the parking lot holding a baby in a red dress on her hip, a friend’s little girl at church with her grandparents. Inside, Kimi sat on the bench, holding her dress together.
“Thanks sweetie.” She kissed the top of my head. Then the baby’s.
I drove back home to my chair.
