Cattails

I’ve stood in this exact place many times. Boise Cascade Lake, inside Veterans Memorial Park. When I shoot here I wear wading boots and waders to give me full freedom to explore. Every time the staccato texture of this stand of cattails pulls my lens towards it.

If you know the feel of a cattail seed head crumbling in your hands as you twist it, or the fun of using them as swords with friends, if you have stepped into a stand of cattails and know the sound and feel of the soft, sucking mud beneath your shoes then you know something today’s kids, by and large, never will.
